Unlike last year, when consumers had 32 shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are only 26 days for holiday shopping in 2013. This means that your Washington DC marketing and advertising strategy needs to be effective and successfully reach your target audience.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday start off the holiday shopping season and are great days to go the extra mile to reach consumers, especially when you consider the predicted spending for these two days. Predictions are out and Cyber Monday is already being crowned the winner. Adobe Digital Index predicts that $2.27 million will be spent on Cyber Monday, with Black Friday sales totaling $1.6 million.

Last week we presented you with 4 important facts you need to know about Cyber Monday. This week, we’ll walk you through how to create an effective Cyber Monday marketing strategy in 4 steps. While the 4 steps are applied to Cyber Monday in this article, they can be applied to any upcoming holiday or event.

1.) Brainstorm and get creative

While many people think Black Friday and Cyber Monday are just for businesses and stores that sell products directly to consumers, a little creativity will tell you otherwise.  You don’t have to be a retailer to get in on Cyber Monday spending. Conduct a brainstorming session to generate ways you can promote your business’s products or services and ways your business can participate in Cyber Monday. For example, if you are a pet groomer, you can offer a discount coupon to new followers on Facebook. If you’re a B2B company, offer an incentive that will encourage new clients to place their first order.

2.) Define your target

Determine who your target audience is and the best way to reach that audience. The right message being received by the wrong people won’t result in a successful marketing campaign and will just be a waste of your time and advertising dollars. 3.) Position it

Decide how you will position your company and the products/services you are promoting on Cyber Monday to appeal to your target audience. Proper positioning can be the difference between losing business to a competitor and making the sale. Make your target audience feel like they’ll be missing out if they don’t purchase your product or service from you.

4.) Spread the word and socialize

Once you have decided how you will promote your products/services and determined who you want to reach, it is time to spread the word. There are countless options for advertising in Washington DC, and it’s not too late to purchase radio commercials or to create effective banner ads to run as part of a digital marketing campaign. This is a great time to use social media to your advantage and promote any special offers through Facebook and Twitter. Take this opportunity to engage with current customers and targets.
