How big of an impact can one small oversight in an advertisement have on a marketing strategy? As a local Washington DC Giant grocery store found out last week, it can result in a giant marketing fail and cause a negative stir on social media… not exactly something any brand wants to be associated with.
The local grocer welcomed Howard University students back from winter break with a large print ad featuring a young white female student. As a historically predominantly black university, the majority of Howard’s students are African-American. Students and alumni took to twitter to express their distaste about the fact that the image didn’t accurately depict a typical Howard University student.
