When it comes to mobile marketing, it's no longer a question of if it will continue to grow...it's a question of how much it will grow. According to LinkedIn Marketing Solutions, advertisers in 2013 spent nearly triple the amount spent in 2012. In 2014, advertisers are expected to spend nearly $47.6 billion on online ads alone, with $13.1 billion of that on mobile ads. That’s a 64% increase from the 2013 spending! With so many consumers attached to their phones 24/7, it's no surprise that advertisers are looking to mobile marketing as a means to reach their target audience.
And it won’t stop growing in 2014. Research firm Gartner predicts that mobile advertising will hit $41.9 billion in 2017. Consumers will continue to be interested in the mobile platform as a means for everything they do, especially as new “mobile” social networks emerge and current social media sites become more mobile – think Instagram and Vine. According the Mashable, at least 17% of the time people spend on their mobile devices is on a social network, and as that percentage increases, so will the amount advertisers spend on mobile and social advertising.
So what does this mean for you as an advertiser in the Washington DC area? The answer is simple – you need to think about your advertising plan with a mobile mindset. As more and more advertisers utilize mobile as a means to reach their target audience, so should you. Mobile advertising options are growing at an incredibly fast rate because businesses want to creatively reach their target audience and keep them engaged. If you aren’t already including mobile in your digital marketing strategy, you’re behind the curve – which is not a position any innovative advertiser wants to be in. And if you already have a mobile marketing plan, now is a great time to re-evaluate it and improve it – especially if your competitors aren’t currently utilizing mobile capabilities.
In addition, consider how you can integrate your mobile marketing and social media marketing strategies. Since in today’s marketing world the two go hand-in-hand, having an integrated strategy can have a very positive impact on the success of your campaign – especially considering how well mobile ads have been doing on large social media platforms like Facebook – who recently reported that 49% of its ad revenue is coming from mobile (Mobile Marketer).
